Investigating infections when the immunity is altered ( by drugs)

Dr Nicholas Davies works at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, the Royal Marsden Hospital, and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust as a consultant neurologist with a sub-specialty and research interest in neurological infection.

He trained in neurology at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, St Mary's Hospital and St George's Hospital (Atkinson Morley) in London. His PhD, from King's College London, addressed the aetiology and outcome of acute encephalitis in adults. After the completion of specialist training, Dr Davies undertook a fellowship in HIV neurology at St Vincent's Hospital in Sydney, Australia.

Since 2016, he has also served as a neurologist at St Mary's Hospital's National Centre for Human Retrovirology, which specializes in the treatment of HTLV infection.

Traumatic vestibular disorders

Dr Barry Seemungal (PhD FRCP) is a consultant neurologist with a specialist and research interest in dizziness and eye movement problems due to ear, eye and brain disorders including multiple sclerosis, stroke and ataxia.

He completed a PhD in Vestibular Neurosciences at the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London and trained in clinical neurology in London. In addition to being part of the Trust's acute neurology rota, he provides an acute vertigo service to St Mary's Hospital, including acute referrals on the Major Trauma Unit, at St Mary's Hospital.

Minder: A digital platform to support the health and care needs of people living with dementia

Professor David Sharp is a neurologist and Director of the Care Research & Technology Centre in the UK Dementia Research Institute focusing on using technology to enhance the lives of people living with dementia. He is also Scientific Director of the Imperial College Clinical Imaging Facility and Associate Director of the Imperial Centre for Injury Studies.

His research programme aims to improve clinical outcomes after dementia and traumatic brain injury (TBI), focusing on common cognitive impairments in domains such as memory and attention. He uses cognitive neuroscience and advanced neuroimaging to investigate the effect of brain injury on brain network function and the effects of inflammation and neurodegeneration. His has explored how new treatments of cognitive impairment can be personalised and his current work focuses on harnessing neurotechnology development to improve the lives of those living with dementia and the effects of brain injury.

A pragmatic appraoch to NPH management

Dr Chris Carswell is a cognitive neurologist at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital and Imperial College Hospitals NHS trust (ICHT). He undertook a PhD in novel immunological treatment in prion disease at UCL and worked with the National Prion Clinic at UCLH before completing SpR training in the West London neurology rotation. He was also an ABN Australasian Fellow and partly trained in Sydney.

Dr Carswell has an active interest in the use of neurodegenerative biomarkers in the assessment of cognitive decline and hydrocephalus. He runs the ICHT neurology NPH clinic, chairs the ABN NPH specialist interest group and leads a Cochrane Review Group assessing the efficacy of shunting in NPH. Dr Carswell holds an MRC CARP grant investigating the mechanisms behind shunt unresponsiveness in NPH. He is also Honorary Secretary and founding charity trustee of SENA.

Stroke after thrombectomy? Stroke Pearls

Dr Harri Jenkins is a consultant neurologist with an interest in stroke medicine. He has worked at Charing Cross Hospital through the development of Hyper—acute stroke units thrombolysis and thrombectomy and is a stroke expert. Harri Jenkins was departmental lead for neurology at Imperial College Hospitals NHS trust and is considered a local legend.

Spinal Surgery - when should neurology refer a patient with back pain?

Mr Christian Ulbricht studied medicine in Germany but came to the UK in 1995. He was trained in neurosurgery in London and became a consultant at Charing Cross Hospital in 2006. He is the clinical lead for spine surgery at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and the Chairman of the Metastatic Spinal Cord Compression (MSCC) MDT. He has been the lead surgeon for spinal tumours since co-founding the MSCC service in 2010. He developed the neurosurgical spinal service at Charing Cross hospital which is now the largest in West London.

Mr Ulbricht's interests are degenerative spine disorders and metastatic spinal cord compression. He is a member of the Global Spine Tumour Study Group which publishes frequently on surgery for cancer. He is also on the advisory board of the European Spine Journal.

Neuro-obstetric MDTs

Joanna Girling set up the preterm Birth Clinic at West Middlesex University Hospital in 2009. She has been a Consultant Obstetrician for over 20 years and her clinical interests in addition to prematurity include Obstetric Medicine and clinical research.

She has a number of regional and national roles including Clinical Director for NW London Maternal Medicine Network, Assessor with MBRRACE (Mothers and Babies reducing Risk through Confidential Enquiry), Specialty Committee member for National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), NW London Clinical Research Network Speciality Lead for Reproductive Health and Childbirth.

Management of Epilepsy in Pregnancy – Lessons from MBRRACE

Dr Pooja Dassan graduated from Guy's, King's and St Thomas' School of Medicine in 2001. She was awarded an MD (Res) in 2009 from University College London, following her research into the release of novel biomarkers into the serum of patients immediately after an acute stroke.

She completed her neurology training at Imperial College Healthcare and the National Hospital of Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square. She is now a Consultant Neurologist at Imperial College Healthcare trust and has a specialist interest in obstetric neurology. She provides a specialist outpatient and inpatient service for pregnant women with neurological problems, at Queen Charlotte's and Chelsea Hospital. This includes a pre-pregnancy counselling service with up-to-date advice on medications and course of pregnancy for women with pre-existing neurological problems.

She is the course director of a unique Obstetric-Neurology course held at Imperial College London, aimed at neurologists, generalists and obstetricians.

OCT for neurologists

Ms Rashmi Akshikar is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at The Imperial Healthcare NHS Trust practising at the Western Eye Hospital at Marylebone and the Charing Cross Hospital at Hammersmith. She is a specialist in treating eye inflammation, cataract surgeries and managing complex retinal diseases.

A consultant eye surgeon with over 20 years of surgical and clinical experience, she provides specialist and personalised treatment for age related macular degeneration, a holistic management of diabetic eye disease including injections, implants and lasers. Being trained as an eye surgeon in the armed forces, Rashmi has extensive experience in treating trauma.

Rashmi has been involved in research for well over 2 decades and has a number of publications, trials and research projects to her credit. She regularly presents at international conferences and contributes to journals. She is a regional lead for ophthalmic local training and enjoys training young surgeons and clinicians.

How to train neurology SpRs in 2023

Dr Rebecca Redwood graduated from Oxford University and undertook neurology SpR training in the West London rotation before. She is a consultant neurologist with an interest in stroke medicine and has worked at Chelsea and Westminster & Imperial College Hospitals NSH trust since 2016. Dr Redwood is the West London Neurology Training Programme Director.

Is it Lymphoma?

Luke is a consultant neuroradiologist at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and honorary clinical research fellow under the Division of Surgery and Cancer.

His main research interests are neuro-oncology and vascular imaging and he is co-lead of the translational brain tumour research group at Imperial College. Within neuro-oncology, Luke is particularly interested in the application of advanced, multiparametric intraoperative ultrasound in guiding brain tumour resection.

Judgement Day

Dr Kennedy qualified from Charing Cross Medical School in 1985 and subsequently trained as a neurologist at Atkinson Morley Hospital. His research used functional imaging and was carried out at the MRC Cyclotron Unit, Hammersmith Hospital and the Dementia Research Group, Institute of Neurology, Queen Square.

He was appointed to the consultant staff at The Chelsea and Westminster and Charing Cross Hospitals in 1997 and is the clinical lead for neurology at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.

He has areas of interest in all aspects of neurology, but particularly Alzheimer's disease, dementia, Parkinson's disease, and stroke.
